Endowing Artistic Techniques
My Pedagogical Approach
As the product of a Liberal Arts education throughout both my high school and collegiate studies, I believe that Fine Art is a noble pursuit both for the artistically inclined as well as the general student.
Throughout his metaphysical texts, Aristotle knits together his theory of beingwhich he roots in the triad: Truth, Goodness, and Beauty. I subscribe to Aristotelian metaphysics in so far as I believe that Beauty should be pursued to better understand and appreciate the Natural world which the Creator has given us. Beauty is accessible and relevant to every individual, and it should be pursued as it develops one’s understanding of what is means to be human.
Fine Art, like Music or a great piece of literature, must be composed and arranged in a compelling or meaningful way to connect with a viewer. Artistic mastery requires more than photorealism; as with Music or Literature, artistic proficiency is developed as one describes a subject with simplicity, clarity, and eloquence. At its core, artistry is an intensive and intellectual endeavor, which like any other craft, requires time and practice. One may learn to become as eloquent with paintbrush as with a pencil.
Thus, it is my heart to endow the next generation with a palette sensitive to compelling, beautiful artwork, which I believe has the power to shape how we see the world and how we see God. By equipping students with the tools to render, it is my hope to impart them with the lifelong skills to look deeper and longer, to have an eye for life’s intricacies, and to live reflectively.
