Artist’s Statement

My journey as an artist began unexpectedly during my freshman year of college. With almost no prior artistic training, I had planned to pursue a more “practical” field of study. Yet my first encounter with traditional Fine Art awakened a hunger I hadn’t known was there. By the time I reached Drawing II, I had fallen in love with color, observation, and the quiet discipline of close study. I discovered that brushstrokes could be as eloquent as language — capable of expressing truth and beauty in a single gesture.

Midway through college, this fascination deepened when I took my first oil painting class. The medium felt instinctive, almost like an extension of myself, and it quickly became the focus of my artistic practice. Since graduating, I have devoted myself to refining a body of work that portrays the natural world through impressionism, color, and form, drawing inspiration from artists such as Sargent, Sorolla, Ingres, and Rubens. My work synthesizes classical techniques with strong design principles, seeking to reveal the dignity of both humanity and nature.

I view art as a form of visual poetry — a weaving together of color, line, shape, and value to create a compelling representation of the world. What began as an irresistible need to create has grown into something deeper: a form of worship. In mirroring the ultimate Creator, I have learned to see beauty in the ordinary and the everyday. My hope is that my work invites viewers to pause, reflect, and rediscover the quiet loveliness found in familiar places, beloved faces, and simple arrangements.

Why Mere Image Art?

Mere Image Art represents my original work; its name comes from my initials—REM—spelled backward.

My inspiration has always been, and will always be, the vast world God created. Each piece I make is a mere representation of His original design.

As an artist and one of His created beings, I reflect the Ultimate Creator; my work becomes a mirror image which points back to Him.
